Timeless Portrait Photography in Canmore, Calgary and the Canadian Rockies
Portrait photography has always been about capturing more than just a face; it’s about encapsulating a moment, an essence, and a story within a series of shots. In the heart of Canmore, surrounded by the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, I strive to create portraits that are not only visually striking but deeply personal and timeless. The type of photos that fit equally well advertising your business, profiling you in a magazine, or on your wall for your family to enjoy into the future.
When I first began portrait photography, I was primarily a ski photographer and just starting professional landscape photography. The transition was challenging yet exciting, each portrait was a new adventure. Much like my ski photography, it’s all about light and subject, but with even more subtleties and nuances. The human element added a dynamic layer to my work, and has opened many doors I hadn’t explored before.
The Magic of Location
Canmore, Calgary, and the Canadian Rockies offer incredible backdrops for portrait photography. Imagine yourself looking heroic with a beautiful Rocky Mountain sunset behind you like a movie set, or a being photographed in the charming town, or in a beautiful forest. Each location tells its own story, but the focus is always on the superstar inside of you – we all have one.
Creating a Connection
A successful portrait is born from the connection between the photographer and the subject. Most of the time it’s about making people feel at ease, allowing their true selves to shine through, and sometimes I wait just and watch, and photograph the energy that the sitter brings that day. I love photographing a natural look with poses that don’t look like poses, making subtle adjustments – fine tuning a radio dial, until we make a magical picture.
The Art of Light and Shadow
Light is the essence of photography, and in portraiture, it plays a crucial role in setting the mood and highlighting features. I love using natural light and studio light in the same ways – to create soft, flattering portraits, or hard light to create more drama and/or ruggedness. Before a session we discuss your goals, and what the photographs will be used for. With that in mind, I plan the shoot accordingly, thinking of the best light at the best location. On shoot day I highlight your personality and make your portrait session the most successful imaginable. Perfectly aligning with your personal brand and taking your brand to the next level.
